International privacy regulators, including bodies from the U.K., Canada, and Hong Kong, have jointly emphasised the necessity for social media platforms to shield users’ public posts from unauthorised data scraping, underscoring their legal obligations.
This collective stance comes amidst the growing prominence of generative AI models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which frequently source vast amounts of online data for training. Concerns arise from the potential misuse of scraped data, which can be utilised for cyberattacks, identity fraud, and illicit surveillance.
Major social media corporations, encompassing Alphabet, ByteDance, and Meta, have been directly apprised, highlighting the mounting global apprehension about the privacy repercussions of data scraping.
