The European Union's AI Act, which officially comes into force today, introduces stringent regulations for AI development, use, and application, targeting major U.S. tech firms like Microsoft, Google, and Meta.
he legislation adopts a risk-based approach, imposing strict obligations on high-risk AI systems, such as autonomous vehicles and medical devices, and banning applications deemed to have unacceptable risks. Companies breaching the Act face fines up to €35 million or 7% of global annual revenues.
Although the Act is now in force, most provisions won't take effect until at least 2026, giving current generative AI systems a 36-month transition period for compliance.
